Mufti should dispel rumours of fresh floods in J-K: Omar Abdullah

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Sunday asked Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to reassure the people about the factual position and dismiss the rumours of fresh floods in the valley.

The former chief minister via Twitter said that the authorities should reassure the people.

"The poor residents of Srinagar must be absolutely terrified. Time for the authorities to reassure them," he tweeted.

"From all the info I've been able to gather we are still a few feet below the danger mark but people are scared and rumours flying," he added.

"Now is the time for the CM to use Radio Kashmir and FM to address people to reassure them of the factual position and dispel rumours," he further tweeted.

With heavy rainfall disrupting normal life in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir's Minister of State for Irrigation and Flood Control Abdul Majid Paddar today assured that his government is prepared to handle any situation in the eventuality of floods.

"The situation is normal at the moment, and it is under control. We have assured people that there is no need to fear, we have learned from the last floods and are prepared. The level of the water is still below the danger mark. Our Chief Minister is going there to look into the situation. If something happens then we are prepared," Paddar said.

According to reports, residential houses were damaged due to a landslide caused by the rain in Chontinar village of Budgam district.

The valley has been witnessing heavy rainfall since yesterday, leading to sudden surge in the water level of rivers, streams and rivulets, causing panic among the residents about possibility of fresh floods.

Meanwhile, Meteorological Department director B.P. Yadav said that the state would witness heavy rainfall in the next six days, adding that the hilly regions in north India would be under a wet spell next week as well.

"There will be rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir for the next six days. Heavy rainfall may also occur tomorrow. There will be a wet spell for hilly regions next week. We have already given warnings through our weather forecast department," he said in New Delhi.
