With the Indian Government and Railway Ministry increasing passenger fares and freight charges, there has been a common outrage amongst opposition parties and public.

Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his NDA government for increasing the passenger fares by 14.3 percent and freight charges by 6.5 percent respectively, saying "it has not been 30 days since Modi Government came into power and despite their 'good day' promise this is the prize which the government has paid to the common man for voting them to power."

Maken said "with the current time indicating a question mark over monsoon and with problems in Iraq indicating price rise in Oil on a global level, there is already an increasing trouble in front of the public"

He said that the increase in fare would result in an increase in coal prices, which would directly affect electricity prices and it would lead to an increase in the price of fruits, vegetables and fertilizers, etc.

Maken said that the raise in the fares and freight charges that would be implemented from 25 June would mean that the train ticket examiner would demand the difference in price from the family returning home from their summer vacation and they would not have time enough to get their money from home.
