Pak army unlikely to target 'U.S foe' Haqqani Network in March Waziristan offensive

The Pakistan military is reportedly planning to launch a ground offensive in North Waziristan in March amid speculation that an attack on the Haqqani Network is unlikely.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently held a meeting, which was attended by army chief General Raheel Sharif and other senior officials to discuss a feasible method to deal with Taliban following a rampant increase in attacks by the outfit.

Meanwhile, it remains uncertain whether the Pakistan military will target the Haqqani Network that boasts a strong foothold in three provinces in Afghanistan, the Express Tribune reported.

A retired two-star army officer said that the Haqqanis probably understand that the operation in North Waziristan is inevitable and further added that they will definitely move out of North Waziristan before the start of any operation.

However, a senior cabinet member said that the government was willing to resolve issues with militant groups through peaceful talks, adding that those who weren't keen on reconciling will have to be dealt with accordingly.
