Pakistan's main opposition party has said that they are ready to cooperate to amend the constitution, if required, to hold the trial of former President General Pervez Musharraf for high treason during the 1999 military coup.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah said his party had never accepted the 17th Constitution Amendment, which gave legal cover to the previous acts of Musharraf, Dawn News reports.

Shah condemned Musharraf's act of October 12, 1999 as a bigger crime for sacking an elected government and amending the constitution.

Meanwhile, he regretted that the government had not taken the opposition into confidence on this issue.

He said that Article 6 is applicable on all the corps commanders serving during that time under Musharraf.

Shah further added that the imposition of emergency on November 3, 2007 should be seen as a continuation of the 1999 coup.
