Pakistan has said it was working on fixing a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly with the objective of restarting bilateral peace talks.

Government spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said Islamabad has always supported a policy of restraint, responsibility and dialogue in the larger interest of ensuring peace in South Asia.

According to the Daily Times, relations between the two South-Asian countries have got further strained since the August 5 and 6 incidents of ceasefire violations that killed five Indian soldiers in Poonch district.

Delhi blamed the incident on the Pakistani army, but Islamabad denied any responsibility.

According to the report, unprovoked firing on the Line of Control (LoC) has killed six Pakistanis and five Indian soldiers since Poonch incident.

The de facto border in disputed Kashmir have jeopardized plans for the prospective meeting in New York, which would come months after peace talks were stalled between the two neighbours.
