People of Delhi should trust police, says Satish Upadhyay

Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay on Wednesday said there exists a big challenge to get the people to put their trust in the police, but things are looking up.

Upadhyay said, "Delhi is the capital of the country and a discussion on the law and order situation between the police and the elected government is a must. However, since Delhi doesn't have an elected government as of now, and because the BJP is in power at the Centre, the BJP called all the MLAs in Delhi and had a meeting with the Home Minister."

"Many topics were discussed, and we talked about many of the problems that women face - chain snatching, eve teasing and molestation," he added.

Upadhyay, however, said that due to certain actions taken up, the trust in the police has grown compared to the past.

"Last year, there were 50,000 cases filed in Delhi. This year there are almost one lakh cases registered. The police have started a helpline to combat corruption and the police provides help online as well. We want the people of Delhi to trust the police, so that they are not hesitant to going to the police and are able to convey their grievances easily," said Upadhyay.

"The behavioural approach of the police to the public, especially to those belonging to the lower classes, was a topic of discussion," said Upadhyay, adding that the traffic situation in Delhi, especially the carriageways, was also discussed.
