Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has showered praises on Australia's Mitchell Johnson following his retirement from international cricket and described the pace spearhead as an 'unbelievable cricketer'.

Pietersen, who was ruled out of the national squad following his side's Ashes washout by Australia in 2014, admitted that he was sad to see his competitor quitting the game,Sport24 reported.

Speaking on Johnson's performance during 2014 Ashes, Pietersen said that the former was the one who transformed the entire series as he bagged 37 wickets for his team.

Pietersen said Johnson was a great competitor who brought lots of energy to the game.

Thirty-four-year-old Johnson retired from the game after claiming two wickets for his side in the second Test against New Zealand that ended in a draw.

Johnson's decision to call time on his career came soon after similar moves by fellow Australians Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Chris Rogers and Ryan Harris.

Johnson replaced Brett Lee as Australia's fourth highest wicket taker when he dismissed Doug Bracewell in the Perth Test. Dennis Lillee (355), Glenn McGrath (563) and Shane Warne (708) are the only bowlers to have taken more wickets.
