Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conferred an award on Tripura's Mandwai block, after every tribal family opened a bank account in the area.
Mandwai block's feat in financial inclusion and financial literacy, besides according benefits to tribals, has made it a role model.
"Of the 12,910 families comprising 55,050 people, there are 21,984 bank accounts with more than one bank account in many households," Mandwai Block Development Officer (BDO) Monohar Biswas said.
"We opened several new accounts and are still in the process. At present, we have around 24,000 bank accounts under this branch in Mandwai. Other than this, we also have four Bank Coordinators (BC), who go to specific points and make the MGNREGA payments," Tripura Gramin Bank branch manager Gautam Laskar added.
The Mandwai block comprises of a tribal population of over 95 percent of the total residents.
