Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw on the sidelines of the 12th Association of South East Asian Nations-India Summit being held at the Myanmar International Convention Centre (MICC).

Earlier, leaders of various countries marked the opening of the 25th ASEAN Summit which will witness the participation of countries like the United States, Japan, China, South Korea, Russia, India, Australia and New Zealand.

The Prime Minister had arrived in Myanmar on Tuesday, following which he met with that country's President, Thein Sein.

During their meeting, Prime Minister Modi and President Sein discussed the strengthening of ties between New Delhi and Naypyidaw in the fields of culture, commerce and connectivity.

Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to meet with leaders of the East Asia Summit (EAS) nations during his visit.

India-Myanmar relations are rooted in shared historical, ethnic, cultural and religious ties.

As the land of Lord Buddha, India is a country of pilgrimage for the people of that nation. The geographical proximity has also helped develop and sustain cordial relations and facilitated people-to-people contact.

India and Myanmar share a long land border of over 1600 kilometre and a maritime boundary in the Bay of Bengal.
