Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the 67th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation at Raj Ghat.
The two leaders were accompanied by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the commanders of the three branches of the armed force: Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir Singh, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha.
The dignitaries observed a minute of silence in honour of Mahatma Gandhi.
Earlier in the day, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi had also paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
An all-religion prayer meeting has been organised at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and the Kirti Mandir in Porbandar, the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi.
On this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated at a prayer meeting.
