Police on Monday arrested five Maoists here.

The arrest comes a day after the landmine blast by suspected rebellions in Sukma village that killed two and injured eight CRPF personnel.

Additional Director General (ADG) of Police (Intelligence), Mukesh Gupta said the five Maoists were arrested in Bijapur district here during a joint search operation. He also added that they have been trying to arrest the rebels for more than a year.

"One very important Naxal, who worked as a Maoist and for the urban network, has been arrested," Gupta said.

Gupta also added that this nexus has become another power structure, controlling mining or local politics to virtually everything in rural areas, and they will probe the nature of wealth growth and try to find out the source.

He also added that the arrested Maoists have been involved in murders, railways and fish plate incidents along with landmine blasts.

"His co-worker Sanjay (name changed), who is an important person of the urban network, also keeps weapons with him. He roams around the jungle with his weapons. All of them belong to one group. They all work under the pressure of Maoist leader Ganesh VK," he added.

The Maoists, who are considered to be India's greatest internal security threat, have off-late intensified their operations in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and some areas of West Bengal.
