Two British-Nepalese human rights researchers, who were apprehended by Qatari authorities for investigating the working conditions of Nepalese labourers in Qatar have been released.
Krishna Upadhyaya along with colleague Ghimire Gundev, 36, were detained by Qatari authorities in Doha on August 27, while filming a documentary on the treatment and working conditions of Nepalese labourers at World Cup construction sites in Qatar.
Upadhyaya's wife, Sarita Poudyal, told Gulf News that the duo were released at 12:30am, adding that she had received a call from her husband who told her that he had been freed and then updated his Facebook to inform his friends.
Expressing her relief at the release of the pair, Poudyal said that they were staying at a hotel in Doha and said they'll be home in two days time but didn't confirm a date and time.
Qatar had earlier confirmed that it detained two British human rights workers who had gone missing while researching the condition of migrant labours saying that the men were suspected of conducting illegal activities in the nation.
The Norway-based Global Network for Rights and Development's researcher Krishna Upadhyaya and photographer Ghimire Gundev had gone missing on August 31st as they were preparing to leave the country.
According to the Guardian, Amnesty International had earlier urged Qatar's authorities to confirm about the workers' whereabouts.
Qatar's foreign ministry said that the men were detained for violating the law and order in the country.
