Alastair Cook smashed his 28th Test century as England produced a spirited fightback to reach 290-3 at the draw of stumps on the third day of the opening Test against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
England captain Cook remained unbeaten on 168 and in process constructed a 165-run stand with Ian Bell (63) for the second wicket to significantly reduce their deficit to Pakistan to 233 at the close of day's play.
Resuming from an overnight score of 56-0, England dominated the game for most of the session in the sweltering conditions at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
Moeen Ali made 35 before he was caught behind by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed off paceman Imran Khan's delivery.
However, Wahab Riaz produced a late flourish in the final session by removing Bell and Mark Wood (4) in quick succession to put the hosts in the ascendancy.
Cook and Joe Root (3 not out) will aim to sustain the momentum when they step on to the crease tomorrow, with the match inching closer towards a possible draw.
