Researchers have developed smartphone-sized device, 'artificial pancreas,' which can treat type 1 diabetes and can be used safely for up to three months.
Daniel Walls, a schoolboy, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and needed up to 10 finger-prick blood tests a day as well as regular insulin injections due to which he missed classes, Daily Express reports.
The 12-year-old was temporarily fitted with the device and attended an entire term at school without having to worry about his health.
Susan, his mother, said that the artificial pancreas could change my son's life and the lives of so many others.
The device is connected to a sensor under the skin which automatically checks blood sugar levels. There is a pump installed in the device which gives the correct dose of insulin when needed and blood sugar levels are charted on a tablet.
According to experts, this was a significant step forward in the fight against the disease which has a devastating impact.
Lead researcher Dr Roman Hovorka said that the data clearly demonstrated the benefits of the artificial pancreas when used over several months, adding they had seen improved glucose control and reduced risk of unwanted low glucose levels.
