Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg continued his dominance as he fended off defending world champion Lewis Hamilton to emerge as the fastest driver in the opening practice session for this weekend's Russian Grand Prix.

The German driver, who clocked his best lap in one minute and 38.127 seconds, was seven-tenths of a second faster than Hamilton, Sport24 reported.

Meanwhile, four-time champion Sebastian Vettel finished third quickest ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Rosberg leads three-time champion Hamilton by 36 points after winning the opening three races of the season.
