Extremely upset over being roughed up at the Patiala House Court complex, Jawaharlal Nehru University students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar on Wednesday told the court it was unfortunate that he was being called 'anti-national and a traitor'.
"I was assaulted when I entered the court premises today. I am an Indian. I have full faith in the country's judicial system. It is extremely unfortunate that when I entered the court premises some lawyers called me anti-national and traitor. I was roughed up before the police. If I am anti-national, then the police can send me to jail," he said.
After Kanhaiya's statement, his counsel Vrinda Grover told the court that the mob assaulted him.
"Even a person chased him and managed to reach inside the room which was just opposite the court room," she said.
Kanhaiya informed the police that this person had already assaulted him at the entrance of the court, adding he felt threatened by his presence.
However, the suspicious person later fled the scene.
Metropolitan Magistrate Loveleen today sent Kanhaiya, who was arrested on the sedition charges, to judicial custody till March 2.
