Serena Williams 'basking in glory' of joining all-time Major winners club

World number one Serena Williams has admitted that that going fourth on the all-time list of major winners alongside Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert had been on her mind all year, and was the first thing she thought upon winning her 18th Grand Slam title.

Williams beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3 in the US Open final on Sunday to win the 18th Grand Slam of her career. She said that she has been trying to reach it for so long, and added that she did not really think she would get there.

Navratilova and Evert joined Williams for the trophy ceremony and presented her with a bracelet carrying the number 18 to mark her achievement. The world number one said that it means a lot to her, The BBC reported.

Williams said that she just could never have imagined that she would be mentioned with Evert or Navratilova, because she was just a kid with a dream and a racquet. She added that living in Compton, this never happened before.

It was Williams' sixth US Open and 18th Grand Slam title, but her first in a year that, before New York, had seen her fail to get past the fourth round at any of the other majors.

The American said that she definitely did not think she was going to win a Slam this year, and added that she had even said that she is ready to start next year already.

Williams said that she is grateful to win a Grand Slam this year, adding that it feels really good.
