The two terrorists who were gunned down by security forces in Shopian earlier today are members of the proscribed terror outfit Hizb-ul Mujahideen, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as Mohammed Idress Sultan and Amir Hussain were involved in terror attacks on security establishments and many other civilian atrocities in the area, the police added.

Sultan alias Chota Abrar was a resident of Safanagri, while Hussain alias Abu Sobaan was residing in Shopian's Awneera.

The police also said that incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, were recovered from the site of encounter.

A case has been registered and investigation in the matter has been initiated.

The encounter broke out in the early hours of Tuesday in Safanagri area of Zainapora in Shopian district after a cordon and search operation was launched in the area to nab the terrorists holed up in the area.

As the search operation was underway, terrorists fired on the search party, which was retaliated by the forces.

The encounter comes two days after two terrorists were gunned down by the security forces in Shopian's Khudpora area.
