The story of the tragic king of Punjab Maharja Dalip Singh is all set to go celluloid. Based on the his real life story of the last King of Punjab, the film will be directed by Kavi Raz and features the acting debut of acclaimed singer-poet Satinder Sartaaj, a sufi singer of repute.

The film will be produced by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and its Executive, Jai Khanna, said that the full fledged movie will be a joint venture which might be named as The Black Prince, describing the tragic yet fascinating story about the last king of Punjab.

This will be written and to be directed by L.A.-based Indian filmmaker Kavi Raz, and the renowned poet singer Sartaaj had been chosen due to his popularity and appearance to portray the great last king who was the son of the legendry Sikh Ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Sartaj will play the lead role in the film which will be bilingual English-Hindi and the project is budgeted at about $5 million. The movie will be set in India and the U.K. and might hit the cinema halls and theatres in late September.

Talking to ANI, Jasjit Singh, one of the producers said the film follows the story of the last Sikh Maharaja who was placed on the throne at the age of 5, after the death of his father. In 1849, Punjab was annexed to British India. The young prince was removed from the throne and eventually was sent to England. His attempts to return to India and reclaim his kingdom were thwarted by the Britishers. He ended up as their pauper, dying alone in a Paris hotel in 1893, said he.

Sartaj on the other hand expressed delight over playing the role. He said he had read a number of screenplays during the past few years and found a deep and profound connection with this story of the Sikhs especially its last rulers. (ANI)
