People on Sunday thronged in large numbers at the venue of funeral of Swetang Patel, the youth who allegedly died in police custody during the Patel community quota agitation earlier this week.
"It is very unfortunate that this death took place. We demand action against the culprits," a local resident told ANI.
He added that the state police had adopted uncompromising steps during the protests and demanded a proper investigation in it.
Swetang was allegedly forcibly taken away by police on August 25. A plea was moved by his mother Prabhaben Patel, who said her son was allegedly beaten up by the police and that he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Gujarat High Court then ordered a second autopsy of Patel's body, which revealed that he had died from a severe head injury.
The high court had ordered a CID probe of the alleged custodial death of 32-year-old Swetang Patel on Friday.
The high court had also asked the state government to appoint a high level committee consisting of the chief secretary, home secretary, the director general of police, the director general of police (law and order) and the director general of police (intelligence) to monitor the overall security situation in the state in the wake of Patel's death and cremation.
