'Terror has no place in our society': BJP on Yakub Memon

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to dismiss 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon's curative petition against death sentence, saying the verdict clearly shows that terror has no place in our society.

"I think it's absolutely imperative to have people like Yakub Memon hung to death because 1993 blast victims know the kind of anxiety they have had to deal with. Law does take its time, but it's imperative to send out a message that terror has no place in our society," BJP leader Shaina NC told ANI here.

Memon will be hanged on July 30 at 7:00 a.m. in Nagpur Jail.

Justice (Retired) P.D. Kode, who gave the death penalty to Memon in connection with the case, said that the court's decision has made the common man retain his faith in the judiciary.

On July 27, 2007, Memon was sentenced to death by Justice (Retd.) Kode, who was then the special judge of the court set up under Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act in Mumbai.

However, his sentence was upheld by a Supreme Court bench headed by then Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan on March 21, 2013. On April 9 this year, a three-member bench headed by Justice A R Dave rejected his review plea.

President Pranab Mukherjee had also rejected his mercy petition.
