Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh said here on Thursday that party leader Shashi Tharoor who was recently sacked from the post of All India Congress Committee spokesperson, still enjoys a high level of confidence amongst its members.
"Shashi Tharoor is still a member of the Congress Party. The only thing which has happened is that he has been taken out from the list of spokespersons; that is all, he still enjoys a high level of confidence among Congress people," said Singh.
"Shashi Tharoor is a very eminent person; he is an honourable Member of Parliament of the Congress party from Kerala. He is one of the most well known writers in this country, a very well known diplomat who has served in the United Nation and in the international scene," Singh added.
On Tuesday, the Congress Party had relieved Shashi Tharoor from his duties as the party spokesperson, following the complaint of Congress' Kerala unit against Tharoor's conduct and behaviour to the party high command.
Earlier this month, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) had taken disciplinary action against Tharoor, accusing him of praising some policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The KPCC had also spoken out against Tharoor after he had accepted the Prime Minister's invitation to join the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' on October 2.
Tharoor had accepted the Prime Minister's invitation, saying that he was honoured to accept the invitation to join the campaign.
