Ride-hailing app Uber has said that it will create 50,000 jobs for women in India by 2020, mostly by training drivers.
Speaking about the pilot project, its New Delhi head, Gagan Bhatia, said, "As a part of this mission, we are today announcing our vision to create 50,000 jobs for women across India by 2020. In fact, as first step, we are embarking on a pilot project with iCare Life to create, train and certify hundreds of women partners across India on Uber platform."
Uber has been under the microscope due to a handful of driver assaults on passengers in some cities, and had earlier this week, pledged in a blog post, to sign up a million female drivers around the world by 2020.
Singapore-based social enterprise iCare Life has tied up with the cab aggregator company to train women drivers. The duration of course is four months and for which a batch of 15 women has already been inducted.
"We are committing our selves to making Uber safest ride in the city (Delhi)," said Bhatia.
He refused to comment on the rape incident, saying that the matter was sub-judice.
Uber's application for a license under the transport department's modified radio taxi scheme is pending.
