The United States and coalition planes targeted mobile oil refineries, used by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to raise funds for its operations, in the recent round of attacks in Eastern Syria, said Pentagon.
Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, said that the latest round of airstrikes took place on Wednesday and was aimed at cutting off the flow of money to the militant group which makes up to two million dollars a day from the oil produced in these refineries, reported the CNN.
Fighter jets from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates flew alongside the U.S. aircraft and pounded 12 ISIS locations during the operation, Kirby said.
While the U.S. military is still assessing the outcome of the attacks, Kirby said that initial indications suggest that the strikes were successful and that Washington is positive that they have caused the damage they wanted.
The airstrikes were carried out just hours after the U.S. President Barack Obama called for a "united action" against the ISIS while addressing the United Nations General Assembly.
