Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi on Sunday distributes compensation cheques to farmers in Uttar Pradesh who have suffered crop damage due to unseasonal rain.
"We will visit four villages. We will particularly visit those families where farmers have committed suicide. We never thought something like this could happen in Uttar Pradesh. I know this a very tiny step but it can be a stepping-stone," Gandhi told the media.
"I have come here to distribute cheques not as a politician but as a human being. I do not want them [the farmers] to feel that they are alone. I told my party members that I do not want this visit to turn into a political forum," he added.
Gandhi represents the Sultanpur constituency of UP in the Lok Sabha.
