Arsenal football team manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that not signing ace forward Cristiano Ronaldo when he had the chance is the biggest mistake of his managerial career, and also admitted that he was so close to acquiring the Real Madrid star before he joined Manchester United.

Ronaldo had a lot of potential suitors before he left Sporting Lisbon for Old Trafford in 2003, and Wenger conceded that not getting to the Portuguese before his Premier League rivals still eats away at him.

Wenger said that his biggest regret, he was so close to signing Ronaldo, and not only did he not get him, the forward signed for United, so that of course still hurts today, Metro.co.uk reported.

The Arsenal manager also surprisingly suggested that the signing he was most proud of was not Thierry Henry, but defender Lauren, who formed part of the legendary 'Invincibles' squad.

Wenger said that he would never say which player was the best, but he added that he thinks it's the signings like Lauren who one spots when nobody else does.

Wenger added that Lauren was a right midfielder who he played at right back and was one of the 'Invincibles'.
