After various exit polls gave an edge to the saffron party in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and even Manipur, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Babul Supriyo on Saturday said it did not came as a surprise to the party, adding that he will not be surprised if the numbers attributed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) jumps to the higher scale.

"We are not surprised actually. What we saw in the exit polls is not something that came as a flash to the BJP. We are expecting great results.. I will not be surprised if the numbers attributed to BJP jump to the higher scale," Supriyo told ANI.

Holding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetisation drive responsible for the people to trust the party even more, he said, "The country has stood behind Modi ji and his bold step of demonetisation. The opposition leaders tied to confuse the public of India but one after the another, the BJP is winning the trust of the people."

However, the opposition has stated the exit polls predictions are insulting the people of the democracy and that everything would be clear once the results are declared tomorrow.

Slamming the television channels for continuously telecasting such shows, Congress leader Renuka Chowdhruy said instead of showing real issues they are spreading lies and rumours.

Echoing similar sentiments, Congress' alliance partner, Samajwadi Party (SP) maintained that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav would form his government with full majority.

Pollsters have predicted the BJP as the largest party in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur while a setback for SAD- BJP alliance in Punjab.

As voting wraps up in five states - Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, the results will be declared later in the day.
