BMW 2 Series already had captured the mind of the premium compact segment buyer. The new Convertible in the 2 Series range further sweetens the deal with compact sport driving dynamics with the wind-in-your-hair experience. The 2 Series Convertible has got classic proportions with front engine, rear wheel drive, BMW agility and a wide open top. You might wonder that slicing the top off the 2 Series Coupe might have affected the rigidity of the entire frame, but we are happy to report that torsional rigidity of the body has increased by almost 20 percent compared to its predecessor.
BMW is offering four model variants, which are 220i, 220d, 228i and the hot M235i, all of which are turbocharged. The BMW 220i Convertible has a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine putting out 184bhp of peak power and the 228i Convertible has the similar 2.0 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that pumps out a higher 245bhp of maximum power. The only diesel variant has a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine that makes 190bhp of maximum power. For drivers demanding more, there is a red hot M235i Convertible version that makes a massive 326bhp of maximum power and sprints from 0-100kmph in a quick 5.0seconds with an automatic transmission.
The new electrically powered fabric top has additional insulation for optimised acoustic comfort. The roof opens and closes in 20 seconds at the push of a button, even while driving at speeds of up to 50kmph if required. Customers get a choice of three roof colours: Black (standard), Anthracite with silver effect and Brown with silver effect (optional). The new 2 Series Convertible will get an extended range of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive such as anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant, Adaptive Headlights, Parking Assistant, rear view camera, Driving Assistant, Speed Limit Info with No Passing Info display, cruise control system with braking function, extended integration of smart phones and music players, Real Time Traffic Information, Online Entertainment, extended functionality provided by apps for internet-based services such as Facebook and Twitter. Currently BMW India has no plans of bringing this model to the Indian line-up.
