Banks tumble after RBI's status quo on interest rates

Union Bank of India (down 3.07%), Axis Bank (down 2.2%), Yes Bank (down 2.14%), State Bank of India (down 2.11%), IDBI Bank (down 2.04%), ICICI Bank (down 1.74%), Canara Bank (down 1.66%), IndusInd Bank (down 1.53%), Federal Bank (down 1.33%), Bank of India (down 1.2%), Punjab National Bank (down 0.94%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (down 0.75%), HDFC Bank (down 0.69%) and Bank of Baroda (down 0.15%), edged lower.

The BSE Bankex was down 1.40% at 14,073.07. It underperformed the Sensex, which was down 0.29% at 19,188.96.

The Bankex had outperformed the market over the past one month till 17 December 2012, rising 9.62% compared with the Sensex's 5.11% rise. The index had also outperformed the market in past one quarter, rising 13.43% as against Sensex's 3.79% rise.
