The government has begun an exercise for setting in place the water regulatory authorities across the country and to this effect guidelines are being prepared for all States and other such entities, says the Chairman of Central Water Commission Mr. Ashwin Pandya.

While inaugurating a Seminar on Clean & Safe Drinking Water in India under aegis of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Pandya emphasized the need for new water policy to regulate, distribute and recycle the water, be it ground water, surface water and the other forms of the water.

According to him, the water regulatory authorities would be able to indulge in an exercise of not only fixing the tariff but also regulate the water consumption for both domestic and industrial consumers.

In addition, the suggested authorities would also have mandate for formation of guidelines for water recycling, felt Mr. Pandya.

He, however, emphasized that the water policy for the country is essential and the centre and all other stakeholders should join hands for the suggested policy so that the use of water is made judicious and economic since with growth in economy and industrial demand, the overall demand of water is also increasing while its availability remains almost stable with its declining quality and effluents merging into it from various industrial processes.

Senior Advisor Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation Mr. Dinesh Chandra in his observations sought participation of industry in a cooperative spirit to find solutions of increasing water scarcity of the country.

He expressed optimism saying that the river linking initiative of the government if realized would lead to adequate supplies of the potable water also and amount to meeting the water demand of the masses.
