Kharif crops sowing touches 986.59 lakh hectares as on 05 September 2014

Rice crop sowing at 360.61 lakh hectares was marginally below the last years coverage of 364.08 lakh hectares

As per the latest reports of sowing of kharif crops, kharif sowing area touched 986.59 lakh hectares as on 05 September compared to 1020.78 lakh hectares touched same of the last season. The delayed southwest monsoon rainfall has hit sowing progress of kharif crops.

The rice sown/transplanted at 360.61 lakh hectares was marginally below the last years coverage of 364.08 lakh hectares. Meanwhile, the pulses sowing at 97.24 lakh hectares and coarse cereals sowing at 174.74 lakh hectares was also below last year's coverage of 103.69 lakh hectares and 192.32 lakh hectares as on date.

The area under oilseeds crops at 173.43 lakh hectares as on 05 September 2014 was below the coverage of 188.93 lakh hectares same time of last season

Sugarcane has been planted in 48.74 lakh hectares as on 05 September compared to 50.32 lakh hectares same time last season. The area under cotton was higher at 123.71 lakh hectares as on 05 September compared to same time last year. Further, the area under jute and mesta stood at 8.13 lakh hectares as on 05 September 2014.
