Metal stocks were trading in red, with the S&P BSE Metal index decreasing 410.4 points or 4.26% at 9224.47 at 13:52 IST.
Among the components of the S&P BSE Metal index, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (down 7.27%), Steel Authority of India Ltd (down 5.46%),Vedanta Ltd (down 5.31%),JSW Steel Ltd (down 5.17%),Tata Steel Ltd (down 4.54%), were the top losers. Among the other losers were Hindalco Industries Ltd (down 4.48%), National Aluminium Company Ltd (down 3.22%), NMDC Ltd (down 2.52%), Coal India Ltd (down 2.31%), and Hindustan Zinc Ltd (down 0.44%).
At 13:52 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 473.62 or 1.15% at 40696.5.
The Nifty 50 index was down 154.7 points or 1.28% at 11926.15.
The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was down 94.31 points or 0.64% at 14652.21.
The S&P BSE 150 Midcap Index index was down 43.83 points or 0.86% at 5051.6.
On BSE,816 shares were trading in green, 1544 were trading in red and 170 were unchanged.
