Delhi PWD Minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday announced that 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras will be installed across the national capital by January next year.
"In the first phase, we have decided to install 2,000 CCTV cameras in each assembly constituency of Delhi. PWD will execute the work and float global tender in this connection in October this year after which the installation works will be initiated," Jain said.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said that the legislators have been asked to provide the details regarding locations in their constituencies for the CCTV cameras by August 15.
"These cameras will be installed in residential as well as market areas in consultation with the RWAs and market association. The MLAs will have a discussion with the RWA members and market associations of their respective constituencies and decide on the locations," he added.
Jain clarified that additional cameras, if needed, can be installed with the Members of Legislative Assembly Local Area Development Scheme (MLALAD) fund by the legislators themselves.
He said the installation work will start in October and it will take three to four months to install the CCTV cameras so the work will possibly be completed by January next year.
Jain added the safety and security of the cameras will be the responsibility of RWAs while the maintenance will be done by the company.
"Localised control rooms will be set up as recommended by the RWAs. The feed can be shared with the police as and when required," he said.
