1984 anti-Sikh riots: CBI files progress report

The CBI on Monday filed a progress report, in sealed cover, in a court here on its further probe in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in which Congress leader Jagdish Tytler was given clean chit by the agency.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed the progress report before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shivali Sharma, who perused the report and kept it in the sealed cover at the request of the agency, which said the probe was underway.

The court had earlier ordered the CBI superintendent of police, monitoring the case, to appear before it on February 22 to apprise him about the status of investigation into the case after the agency failed to file a status report.

During the hearing, the court, after perusing the report in which it was alleged that some witnesses were threatened, asked the CBI whether any other witness was also threatened.

It also asked how much time the agency required to complete its investigation. The CBI officer sought two months time, which was granted.

The court now posted the matter for April 27 for filing of a detailed status report.

The court on December 4, 2015, had ordered the CBI to further investigate a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against Tytler, pointing to arms dealer Abhishek Verma's statement that Tytler had tried to influence a witness of the riots, saying it should be found out whether Verma's statement was true or not and other aspects of the case.

Verma, in his statement, told the CBI that Tytler had tried to influence one of the witnesses by giving him a hefty sum of money and promising to settle his son abroad.
