Nepal traffic police arrested 715 people for drunk driving in past five days during Dashain, the biggest festival in the country, said an official statement Thursday.

"We arrested 715 people on the charge of driving the vehicle after consuming alcohol," the home ministry said in a press statement.

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division launched an anti-drunk driving campaign last year and intensified it during the festival period, reports Xinhua.

The campaign has helped to reduce the numbers of fatal road accidents in Nepal.

Traders said the sales of liquor have come down by more than 60 percent.
