Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumni in Saudi Arabia have demanded a posthumous Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, for university founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a media report said.
AMU alumnus Zaif Ahmad Qaisar put forward the demand for a Bharat Ratna for Sir Syed. His demand was backed by more than 300 alumni gathered to mark an event organised to remember the contribution of Sir Syed to society, Arab News reported Thursday.
Sir Syed Day, the annual get-together organised by the alumni of the AMU, was held at the Sabic beach camp in Jubail.
Sir Syed recognised the critical role of education in the empowerment of the Muslim community.
