Army chief General Dalbir Singh, visiting the northeast on Friday to review the security situation, said all operations in the hinterland of the region should be "people friendly".
The army chief visited Dimapur and Sukna during his day-long visit to the Eastern Command.
An official statement said the army chief emphasised on the need to maintain constant vigil along the borders.
He also directed that all operations in the hinterland must be people friendly and troops must be sensitised to uphold human rights and operate within the rules of engagement.
Gen. Dalbir Singh appreciated the troops of the Eastern Command for the work put in to maintain peace and stability in the region.
The visit came a day after two militants were killed and another was injured in a gunfight with security forces in Phek district of Nagaland.
The intensity of anti-terror operations in the area has increased after an attack on an army convoy in Manipur in June, in which 18 soldiers were killed and 11 others injured.
The army, in an one-of-its-kind operation, had attacked two terrorist camps along the India-Myanmar border.
The Indian Army said the operations were carried out in coordination with Myanmar following specific intelligence inputs.
