The army will plant 12,000 saplings in the Mathura Cantonment area, military officials said on Tuesday.

The green drive will be undertaken by soldiers of the Strike 1 formation, beginning Wednesday.

"The Cantonment is presently 75 per cent green but officials feel there is scope for more," Lt Gen Shokin Chauhan said.

"The 'Green Initiative' will include active participation of the families and children of the soldiers."
