The Delhi High Court Wednesday was informed by the central government that Assam has rejected its request to depute a police officer to the national capital to act as an interface on issued concerning the safety of people from the northeast living there.
Assam government said it has already been going through the shortage of police personnel in the state and can not send officers on deputation, counsel for the central government told the division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw.
The central government has written to eight states of northeast to send their police officers on deputation to act as an interface with the people of that region staying in the capital, said counsel adding that while seven states has not replied yet, Assam refused the request.
The bench, hearing a suo motu case for providing security to migrants from the northeast here, following the alleged beating to death of 19-year-old Nido Tania of Arunachal Pradesh, now posted the matter for July 2.
The court had earlier directed the Delhi Police to take on deputation police officers hailing from the northeast to act as an interface.
