Police teams have been sent to West Bengal, Mumbai and Delhi to search for a person wanted in connection with an attack on an AASU office in eastern Assam's Dhemaji district, Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay said on Thursday.
Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu Samannay Samiti leader Subodh Biswas, against whom police issued a wanted notice, is accused of inciting the mob on March 6 to attack and vandalise the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) office at Silapathar town.
"Our teams are working hard to trace Biswas, who escaped the state by crossing the Brahmaputra river by a boat. We have arrested some persons," Sahay said.
Tension continued in the district after the crime, forcing district administration to impose night curfew in the town for the next few days.
The Assam government has ordered a probe to be headed by Additional Chief Secretary V.B. Pyarelal and and asked him to submit his report within a month. Assam Police have set up a Special Investigation Team.
Protests have rocked the state as AASU and other student and civil society organisations are demanding a ban on the NBBUSS.
