Australian authorities may cancel the citizenship of an Indian-origin man for forging his identity.
Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said his department was investigating Victorian businessman Randeep Singh Waraich's falsifying document case, Herald Sun reported Tuesday.
Randeep Singh Waraich was found guilty in the Heidelberg Magistrates' Court last week on charges of supplying false information in his application for Australian visa and citizenship documents.
He was fined Australian dollars 5,000 and was also ordered to pay the court costs.
According to the report, he would be the first person in seven years to be stripped of Australian citizenship and deported.
"The conviction means Waraich may be liable for revocation of his Australian citizenship," Scott Morrison was quoted as saying.
"The Department of Immigration and Border Protection identified that this Thomastown resident had assumed a false identity in an attempt to circumvent Australia's border control and migration laws," Morrison added.
