A court in West Bengal's Howrah on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for killing four children including three of his own.
Rais Qureshi, a resident of Uluberia in Howrah, was convicted of murdering his three children - daughters Rounak (4) and Alisha (2.5), son Shahid (6) - and his grandson Hassan (6).
Suspecting the children to be illegitimate, Qureshi, a butcher by profession, had thrown the children into a river in November 2011. He was arrested few days later.
Observing that the case fell under the rarest of rare cases, the court of Additional Sessions Judge, Uluberia, awarded him death penalty.
The death sentence is subject to confirmation by the Calcutta High Court.
