In line with a recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Bihar Government on Wednesday paid Rs 3 lakh to the family of an alleged CPI (Maoist) leader, who died in police custody four years ago.

According to the commission, there were several loopholes in the police theory about the death of the accused named Madan Yadav, a resident of the Palamu district in Jharkhand.

"The victim was arrested on June 6, 2012 for investigation and he died the next day due to torture in police custody at Barun Police Station in Aurangabad. The commission was informed that a case was registered against the delinquent policemen," said a statement from the commission.

"The reports also revealed that there were contradictions and discrepancies in the police statements about the place of his arrest, lack of medical examination after the arrest, the reason behind injuries on his body, his stomach being without food and water etc," added the statement.

The special secretary of the Bihar's home department said that the Government has made the compensation and the next of kin of deceased Madan Yadav had also withdrawn the amount of relief from the bank.
