The French police have found the bodies of five babies in the house of a couple in Louchats, near the city of Bordeaux in southwestern France.

Police have interrogated the 40-year-old husband, who found the first corpse of a newborn baby stuffed inside a thermal bag in a freezer earlier on Thursday, Efe news agency reported citing TV channels iTele and BFM TV.

During their search, police officers found four more bodies.

Initial results from investigations suggest the 35-year-old wife had concealed her pregnancies and given birth at home alone, according to the daily Sud-Quest.

The woman has been taken to Pellegrin University Hospital in Bordeaux for gynaecological and psychiatric examination.

The couple, who have two daughters, aged 13 and 15, have no prior criminal records.

DNA samples collected by police from the house where the bodies were found will be tested on Friday to help determine the children's parentage and whether they were born dead or murdered.

If murdered, this case would be the country's worst infanticide since 2010.

In July that year, residents of Villers-au-Tertre in northern France found human remains in plastic bags in their garden.

Investigations revealed a 45-year-old mother had smothered her eight newborn children at birth and concealed them for over a decade.
