Brazilian starlet Thiago Maia has refused to sign a new deal with Santos amid speculation linking him to Atletico Madrid.

The Brazil under-20 international has impressed as a regular starter for the eight-time Brazilian Serie A champions this year, reports Xinhua.

According to the Uol news portal, the midfielder rejected a new contract offer worth 30,000 US dollars a month plus bonuses.

Maia's current deal with Santos expires in February, meaning he could be free to join the Spanish club next summer on a free transfer.

The 18-year-old's consistent form has earned him five caps for Brazil's under-20 team this year.
