The Border Security Force (BSF) seized a huge quantity of Phensedyl, a cough syrup, valued at Rs.8 lakh, from the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura, an official said Thursday.
BSF troopers from 19 Battalion on a tip-off intercepted a truck on National Highway-44 near the BSF headquarters in Nalkatta area of Dhalai district of Tripura Wednesday, and seized the illegal consignment.
"On searching, the troopers recovered 9,900 bottles of Phensedyl valued at Rs.8 lakh that was being smuggled under craters of beer. At least 13,800 bottles of beer valued Rs.11 lakh were also recovered," a BSF official said.
Truck driver Span Nath, resident of Jalabasa village of Unakotte district in Tripura, was arrested.
During interrogation, Span Nath said that the truck was loaded from Boragaon in Guwahati, Assam.
