The collapse of a four-storeyed building in North Delhi's Inderlok area Friday, which claimed 10 lives and left 15 others injured, has once again highlighted the use of poor construction material in buildings.
According to the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the reason for the collapse of the 50-year-old building was the poor quality of the raw material that weakened its base and it crumbled following ongoing construction in an adjacent plot.
Delhi has witnessed similar incidents in the last couple of years:
June 1, 2014 -- Three people were killed and 12 others, including three women, injured when a three-storeyed under-construction building collapsed in the congested Sadar Bazar area of Old Delhi. The main reason for the collapse was the use of poor construction material.
Feb 17, 2014 -- Two women died and two others were injured when the top two floors of a three-storeyed building, owned by the in-laws of cricketer Virendra Sehwag, collapsed in the Sadar Bazar area of central Delhi due to its dilapidated condition.
Oct 15, 2013 -- A woman and her two-year-old daughter died while the other family members were injured when the single-storeyed house in which they lived collapsed in Delhi's Kashmere Gate area as the building was in a deplorable state.
Oct 9, 2013 -- Two people were killed and one person was hurt when a 50-year-old three-storeyed building collapsed in the Sadar Bazar area. The building was in a dilapidated condition. An MCD official had asked the owner to evacuate the residents and renovate the house.
