A court here Saturday granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) two days' transit remand of a top official in a corruption case involving a kin of Railway Minister P.K. Bansal.

The accused, Mahesh Kumar, member (staff) of the Railway Board, was nabbed late Friday when he arrived here by a flight from New Delhi.

A former general manager of Western Railway, Kumar was produced before the Special CBI Court by the CBI, an officer said.

He was handed over to the CBI on a two-days transit remand for taking him to New Delhi in connection with the ongoing investigations into the corruption case involving Vijay Singla, a nephew of Bansal.

The CBI also carried out searches at Kumar's offices and residence in Mumbai in connection with the scam which has kicked up a major political controversy.

According to CBI, Kumar, through an agent, allegedly agreed to pay a bribe of Rs. 90 lakhs to Singla as consideration for getting him (Kumar) posted as member (electrical) of the Railway Board.

The post is considered lucrative as the occupant controls the fate of thousands of crores worth of railway projects.
