A one-year-old boy, who fell into a borewell in Telangana's Medak district on Saturday, was brought up dead on Sunday as all efforts to rescue him proved futile, police said.

Rakesh fell into the borewell, which had a depth of about 60 feet, on Saturday morning while playing with his five-year-old elder brother Balesh. After nearly 24 hours, the rescue workers retrieved his body from the pit at a depth of about 35 feet.

The incident occured in Bommareddygudem village of Pulkal mandal in Medak district.

All hopes of the boy's parents to find him alive were dashed when rescue workers retrieved his lifeless body after digging a parallel hole. The body bore injury marks on the head, indicating that the boy might have got stuck. Balesh was inconsolable on seeing the body of his younger brother.

Authorities had launched rescue operations with three JCBs and two earth-movers. A medical team had also lowered an oxygen pipe into the borewell. The rescue operations involving the personnel of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), had continued throughout the night.

The boy and his brother was playing in a field with the borewell. Since no water was found in the borewell, the owner of the field had removed the case piping but left the hole uncovered. When Rakesh fell, his brother tried to pull him by his leg but could not save him.

Balesh informed his father Sailu, a labourer, who in turn alerted the police. The family stayed near the field.
