The national capital remained chilly on Tuesday as an overcast sky and cold winds brought the maximum temperature down to 15.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, the Met office said.

Northern Railway said 51 trains were cancelled in the morning due to dense fog.

"Five trains were rescheduled and 17 delayed as the visibility at 8.30 p.m. was no more than 300 metres," said a Northern Railway official.

Air traffic, however, was not affected by the foggy conditions.

Commuters in Delhi, particularly those riding two-wheelers, fortified themselves with both sweaters and jackets to combat the chill.

"I wore both sweater and jacket for the first time in this winter season. It's not too cold but I know that the wind can really affect my health," Manoj Verma, an executive in a private company, told IANS.

Arpit Srivastava, who works in a private hotel, said: "Apart from warm inner wear, I wore a sweater and jacket today. It must be the chilliest day of the season."

The Met office has forecast a continuation of the chilly conditions in the days ahead.

"There would be dense fog on Wednesday morning while the sky may be clear throughout the day," an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here said.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 19 and seven degrees Celsius, respectively.

Tuesday's minimum temperature was 8.9 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average, while the maximum humidity was 97 percent.

The maximum temperature on Monday was 19 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at six degrees Celsius, also a notch below the season's average.
